Why Today’s Tanubi Run Feels Different — Reading the Four Daily Twists

Run the Tanubi daily a few days in a row and you will eventually notice a small badge at the top of the screen. A mist glyph, a leaf blowing sideways, a balloon. That is the day’s twist: a modifier that leaves the level generator completely alone and swaps out the air or the gravity for one day only. The awkward part is that only one of the four actually changes the physics, yet while you are running all four feel equally like "today is harder". This article pulls the four apart and puts them on the same measuring stick the earlier articles used — one second is worth ten points — so you can tell which twist is costing you time and which one is only costing you nerve.

Why today’s board differs from yesterday’s: four twists, equal odds, seed-derived

There are four twists: Clear, Mist, Windy and Floaty. Internally the game picks one out of a flat, unweighted list of four, so the odds are exactly even at one in four apiece. That means roughly every fourth day is a day where nothing at all is different. Keeping that quarter in mind is useful, because it tells you how unreliable the feeling of "something is off today" really is.

What decides it is not the date itself but the run’s seed. The daily seed is built from the calendar date, so in practice it changes every day, but the key is the seed. Anything that shares that seed — a challenge link you send to a friend, or the ghost that replays somebody else’s run — reproduces the same twist whenever it is opened. If you have ever worried that yesterday’s challenge link will resolve to a different modifier today, it will not.

The scope is fixed too. Twists apply to daily runs and challenge runs only. Practice and campaign never receive one; the campaign has its own separate, stage-numbered events, which we come back to at the end. If you have had a day where practice felt fine and the daily felt alien, a twist is usually the reason.

You can check it before you commit to a run. The hub’s daily panel shows the badge with its emoji and name. On a Clear day, though, no badge is drawn at all, so read the absence of a badge as Clear. The same badge appears at the top of the play screen, which is handy when you have forgotten mid-run what today actually was.

A single run is three stages long, and the same twist is applied to all three. There is exactly one exception: on the final boss stage, Floaty is dropped and the stage reverts to Clear. Carry the floaty jump timing of the first two stages into the boss fight and you will come up short on a leap you were sure you had. It is a deliberate readability exception, but it catches everybody at least once.

Floaty is the only twist that touches physics: what a 0.45 gravity multiplier doubles

Floaty is a one-line change: it sets the stage’s gravity multiplier to 0.45. Your jump launch speed of 560 is untouched. Same launch speed with 45 percent of the gravity means both your peak height and your airtime scale by 1 divided by 0.45, roughly 2.2 times. A jump that normally tops out around 75 pixels, a bit over three tiles, reaches about 166 pixels, close to seven tiles, on a Floaty day.

Height is not the only thing that grows. A full jump arc, launch to landing, stretches from about half a second to about 1.1 seconds. That extra 0.6 seconds is not pure loss, though, because horizontal movement keeps working in the air. Longer airtime means each jump also carries you further sideways, so gaps you could not clear become clearable and vertical sections get genuinely faster.

Where you lose is on the way down. Falling a given height takes roughly 1.5 times as long, because fall time scales with the inverse square root of gravity, and one over the square root of 0.45 is about 1.49. On layouts built around descending, that extra half-multiple accumulates on every single drop. The clock does not wait for the twist, so against a 45-second budget it is a straight expense.

Precision suffers as well. If it takes 2.2 times as long to reach the platform you aimed at, you get more time to correct in the air but you also take much longer to recover from an overshoot. So the trick to running Floaty days quickly is not jumping better, it is jumping less. With more than double the reach you can skip intermediate platforms entirely and remove jumps from the route. That is the single biggest time saver on a Floaty day.

Character fit shifts noticeably too. The double jump and the wall kick both scale straight into that 2.2 times height, so their value jumps. The glide moves the other way: there is little point spending inputs to slow a descent that is already slow. The previous article argued that the dash is a trade against the glide rather than an addition; on Floaty days that trade tilts slightly against the dash, because jumps now cover gaps that used to need one.

Counting what does not change on a Floaty day

The gravity multiplier is applied to the player and nobody else. Enemies fall under normal gravity regardless. That means a hopping enemy’s arc, and the rhythm of its landings, is exactly the same on a Floaty day as on any other. You are the only thing moving in slow motion, so approaching a stomp with your usual spacing lands you on empty air after the enemy has already dropped away. Missed stomps on Floaty days are not a skill problem, they are a one-sided time dilation problem.

The same applies to your leaf. A thrown leaf falls under normal gravity, so while you are hanging high in the air the projectile droops exactly as it always does, and your usual range estimate lands short. Incoming projectiles behave the same way, dropping at their normal speed. On a Floaty day it is more reliable to use your extended jump to get above something and stomp it than to try to solve it at range.

Terminal velocity, 780, is also outside the multiplier. Normally you hit maximum fall speed after about 0.3 seconds and five tiles of falling; on a Floaty day that takes about 0.72 seconds and eleven tiles. So every fall shallower than eleven tiles is slower than usual, while in a deeper pit only the last stretch runs at the familiar speed. That is why dropping down a genuinely deep shaft costs less extra time than you would expect.

The glide’s 105 floor and the wall slide’s 130 sit outside the multiplier, but the acceleration that carries you down to them does not. Glide acceleration drops from 480 to 216, so reaching that 105 floor takes 0.49 seconds on a Floaty day instead of the usual 0.22, which means the glide itself is a little slower too. Over five tiles, 120 pixels: a normal day is 1.25 seconds gliding against 0.33 seconds falling, so one glide is worth 0.93 seconds; a Floaty day is 1.39 against 0.50, or 0.89 seconds. The price does not go up, it stays effectively the same — roughly 0.9 seconds either way, which is 9 points. What changes is what that price buys. Everything already descends slowly, so there is less danger left for the glide to remove. Holding the glide through a Floaty stage is a loss not because it became more expensive, but because the same fee now buys less.

The dash never interacted with gravity in the first place, since it pins your fall speed to zero while it runs, so its speed, distance and cooldown are unchanged. Only its relative worth moves. Being able to enumerate what shifted and what did not is what separates a fast Floaty run from a frustrating one.

Mist and Windy only change what you see: the 0.3 seconds you pay to an illusion

What actually happens on a Mist day is a thin white veil over the whole screen plus six soft mist clumps drifting across it. The terrain, the collision boxes and the enemy placements do not move by a single pixel. Keeping the modifier out of the physics is deliberate: it preserves the guarantee that the generated level is solvable.

That does not make reduced visibility free, though. Lower contrast delays your read on distant enemies and small coins by roughly half a beat. The right adjustment on a Mist day is to lean less on look-then-move and more on remember-then-move. A daily board is determined by that day’s seed, so within the same day every attempt gives you the identical layout, and whatever you memorised on the first run is still valid on the second.

The mist clumps drift at only 10 to 24 pixels per second, less than a tenth of your 200-per-second run speed. So although a clump can look like it is following you, you are in fact overtaking it. There is never a reason to slow down and let one pass.

Windy produces a much stronger illusion. Fourteen wind streaks sweep across the screen at 320 to 680 pixels per second. The view is 20 tiles wide on the desktop default, which is 480 pixels, so a streak crosses the whole screen in 0.7 to 1.5 seconds. Running that same width on foot takes you 2.4 seconds. In other words, something is constantly flowing through your field of view at 1.6 to 3.4 times your own speed.

That mismatch reads as "I am moving faster than usual", which makes players cut jumps early and estimate landing points too near. The streaks are also tilted slightly downward, which can make your own fall look like it is drifting sideways. None of it is real: there is no wind force, so there is nothing to steer against. Hesitate for 0.3 seconds and you have paid 3 points; do that a few times a stage and a whole jar has evaporated. On Mist and Windy days there is exactly one correct response, which is to run precisely as you always do.

No score attached to twists: where the fairness actually comes from

Twists carry no score bonus and no penalty. There is no twist term anywhere in the scoring formula; the same five channels feed it as always, namely coins, kills, destruction, skill bonuses and the clock. Nothing is discounted because gravity was low, and nothing is inflated because the screen was windy.

At first glance that looks unfair, since the same 45-second clock runs on days when the physics changed and days when it did not. But the twist is derived from the seed, and everybody running that day’s daily draws the same one. Ranking within a given day is therefore decided under identical conditions, which removes any need for a correction factor in the first place.

Challenges and ghosts are protected by the same mechanism. When a run is replayed, the ghost’s copy of the level receives the same twist. Replaying a Floaty record under Clear physics would desynchronise the trajectory and break the reproduction entirely, so this is load-bearing rather than cosmetic. Put the other way round: the challenge you send runs on the recipient’s machine with the same gravity and the same air as yours.

The one comparison to be careful with is across days. Because the seed comes from the calendar date, your record from yesterday and your record from today may sit under different twists. If you genuinely want to know whether you improved, compare like twists with like. Lining a Floaty score up against a Clear score is especially weak, since the two demand different routes.

Incidentally, the daily missions are derived from a completely different constant, so they are uncorrelated with the twist. They are, however, fixed by the same date, which means each day pairs one twist with one mission set. If a chain-stomp mission lands on a Floaty day, that is a strong signal to attempt it today: 2.2 times the airtime is 2.2 times the opportunity to reach the next enemy without touching the ground.

The campaign’s Dusk is a separate thing, plus a per-twist opening plan

There is a fifth entry in the badge vocabulary that a daily will never show you: Dusk. The dictionary used to label the daily badge still contains it, so the name gets around, but it has been removed from the daily rotation entirely.

It was removed because Dusk is the only one that genuinely cuts your vision. Under Dusk, only a radius of about 150 pixels around you, a little over six tiles, stays lit, and everything beyond that sinks to near black. That is a different category of effect from a thin mist veil, and it was judged too heavy for a daily where you are running an unfamiliar board every day.

Dusk now survives as a campaign-only event. The campaign is laid out by stage number: standard-axis stages pick up low gravity, Dusk and mist on an eight-stage cycle, with wind appearing more sparsely. Across the 100-stage main run, Dusk lands on stages 18, 26, 34, 42, 58, 66, 74, 82 and 98 — boss stages are excluded, so some numbers that fit the cycle are skipped anyway. Because the schedule is by number, you always know a Dusk stage is coming.

The values themselves are shared with the daily. Campaign low gravity is the same 0.45, and mist and wind use exactly the same rendering. So a Floaty daily doubles as a rehearsal for the campaign’s low-gravity stages, and if a twist day went badly you can go and practise the equivalent campaign event stage on demand, which is something a daily can never offer.

The underground bonus stages never receive an event of any kind. And the "chase" that appears on tower stages is not a twist at all: it is a rising instant-death threat that exists only in the campaign. It sits in the same badge strip, but it is a different animal.

To close, here is the opening plan by twist. No badge means Clear, so run normally. On Mist or Windy, change nothing about your inputs — the urge to compensate is itself the trap. On Floaty, cut the number of jumps by skipping intermediate platforms, remember that enemies and your own leaf still move under normal gravity, and keep in mind that gravity returns to normal for the final boss stage. Those three habits recover most of the points that twist days quietly take off your score.
